Mall kiosks · RMUs
Retail merchandise unit insurance
Whether you sell food, clothing or sunglasses from your RMU, the mall will want a certificate before you open.
Not only food
The program is not limited to food vendors. Indoor and outdoor carts selling merchandise qualify too, including operators who move between locations across the country.
Have your lease in front of you
Mall leases specify the limits of liability you have to carry, and they are not all the same. Read yours before you request a quote so the policy you buy actually satisfies it — buying first and reading afterwards is how vendors end up amending a policy in week one.
You will also need your landlord’s details:
- The exact legal entity name, not the shopping center’s trading name
- The full mailing address for the certificate
- Whether the lease requires additional insured status as well as certificate holder
Those two are different things, and leases frequently ask for both — the difference is explained here.
Read the exclusions
Before buying any online program, read what is excluded. Kiosks that cook, use open flame, or handle certain products are treated differently from a kiosk selling packaged goods, and the exclusions are where that shows up.
After you buy
A certificate is available once the policy is in force, which is what you provide to the mall. If you operate several units, expect a separate certificate per location.
